County sees demand for emergency assistance increase
“Things are pretty bad right now. We’ve been pretty busy around here,” said Goioa Garrett, the program director for the Generic Intake Unit at the Guilford County Department of Social Services (DSS). Garrett said the department has seen an increase of 300 to 500 applications a month for emergency assistance to pay for food and energy expenses. Garrett said, low-income families are eligible to receive food assistance through Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), a federal food assistance program.
