County sees demand for emergency assistance increase
“Things are pretty bad right now. We’ve been pretty busy around here,” said Goioa Garrett, the program director for the Generic Intake Unit at the Guilford County Department of Social Services (DSS). Garrett said the department has seen an increase of 300 to 500 applications a month for emergency assistance to pay for food and energy expenses.
Garrett said, low-income families are eligible to receive food assistance through Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), a federal food assistance program. Monthly allotments are put on an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card. To receive benefits from the DSS, persons must meet an income test. Dudley High Band needs funds for Presidential Inauguration
The Dudley High Marching and Concert Band will be a part of history in January as President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office.
The band is set to perform at the Performing Arts Center and Harris Theater at George Mason University. Other student musicians from around the United States will be performing also.
